Many people ask what the difference is between a psychologist and other mental health professionals such as a psychiatrist, mental health counselor, or social worker.
A psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) is a doctorate-level clinician who has gone through approximately 5 years of graduate school education. As a psychologist, I have been highly trained in the diagnosis of mental disorders and conducting psychological/neurocognitive assessments. Psychologists take years of courses around how the mind functions, ways to improve functioning, and how to apply science to our theories. Unique dissertation research is required of Ph.D. candidates. My dissertation was on why veterans follow recommendations to use antidepressants. In addition to book knowledge, my APA doctoral program included thousands of hours of supervised experiences to apply that knowledge to real-world situations.
I understand that you might be thinking, "But how does all of that help me?" The short answer is that extensive education provides increased awareness of multiple perspectives and a flexible context for our exploration together.
